 :: Microsoft Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer

Testing:

Have you ever seen someone Benchmark a mouse? I haven't so I will try and test the mouse in many areas as I can. First I would like to say that I have installed the new IntelliEye/IntelliMouse Software, and have both the IntelliMouse Explorer and Wireless IntelliEye Explorer plugged in using the USB ports. The receiver for the Wireless is USB, and the IntelliMouse Explorer has the option to be plugged in by PS/2. But in both cases they are plugged in the USB port.

First I wanted to talk about the software that it came with. The IntelliEye software lets you customize your mouse in more ways than the first release of the software. Here are some images of the different menus the software has:

These screenshots are of every tab that the mouse software has. If you notice from the screenshots you can really tweak your mouse to exactly how you like it. These images will basically show you what settings I have, but not all since I have been experimenting with them too.

Test System:

  • Windows 2000 Pro with SP2
  • Abit KT7-Raid Motherboard
  • 640mb PC-133
  • GeForce3

    As far as testing goes I played Counter-Strike and Operation Flashpoint MP Demo with the IntelliMouse Explorer, and Wireless IntelliEye Explorer. I first started off with the Wireless IntelliEye Explorer and I noticed that it was not as precise, and only went where I wanted it to go approximately 90% of the time. It seemed like it was a bit sluggish and not responding to me as fast as the IntelliMouse Explorer did.

    Although I could not account for the performance differences in both games, I felt it was still necessary to report them. In both games, as well as a graphics application the Wireless Explorer was not as responsive as the IntelliMouse Explorer. With the IntelliMouse Explorer I was able to get more precise actions out of it.

    The Wireless Optical has made my desk space a bit cleaner so I don't have to worry about extra cords and such. As I wanted to test out how far I could actually stand away from the review and still control the mouse I was amazed. On a brochure I had gotten with the mouse it says that it works from 6 feet away, well in my testing I got up to 9 feet away from the receiver and the mouse worked just fine. But if you were to go 9 1/2 feet, then the mouse had some horrible lag, and was not even worth using. At 9 feet away the curser of the mouse was hard to see so I had to make the pointer extremely big so I could see what I was doing. So by using this mouse and you are only a few feet from your computer or like to sit on the couch instead of your computer chair then the wireless is the way to go for you.

    So not only did I use the Wireless IntelliEye Explorer with games, but I also used it browsing the internet, searching for code in an html doc, and many other things. What I found was that Wireless IntelliEye Explorer is not as smooth and quick thinking as its brother, the IntelliMouse Explorer. Overall the Wireless Explorer is a great mouse; however it does have some flaws. The software, ergonomic design, and new features make it a very stylish, easy to use mouse that I will continue using.
